Russell Stamey Taylor



Mr. R.S. “Russell Stamey” Taylor, Jr., 96, of Lillington passed away Friday, January 6, 2017 in his home. He was born October 18, 1920 in Bladen County, the son of the late Lola Campbell Taylor and Russell Stamey Taylor. He graduated from Lillington High School in 1937. R.S. enlisted in the U.S. Army and served 3 years until discharged December 14, 1945. He was married to Nell Elizabeth Hurst of Winston-Salem, NC for 54 years until her passing, March 27, 1999. R.S. spent most of his life in retail furniture sales having retired from Wilbourne Furniture Company after 30 years of employment in 1985. He was a life long member of Lillington Presbyterian Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Elder, President of the Men of the Church and also President of the Men of the Church in the Presbytery. R.S. was honored as Elder Emeritus at the church after many years of service. He was also active in the Lillington community having served in the Jaycees and on the local school advisory board. R.S. was preceded in death by two of his sisters, Elizabeth T. Currin of Oxford and Estelle T. Bradley of Lillington.

R.S. is survived by 3 children, Janice E. Taylor of Lillington; Debbie T. Smith and husband, Eddie of Lillington and their children, Jay Smith and wife Melissa and their sons, Taylor and Henry; Jamie Smith and wife, Brooke and Nicole Murchison and husband, Tyler; Stamey R. Taylor and wife, Julie of Lillington and their children, Lauren Taylor and Brian Taylor; sister, Margaret T. Bradley of Raleigh; nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, January 10, 2017 at Lillington Presbyterian Church with Rev. Dawn Stoker officiating. Burial will follow in Harnett Memorial Park in Lillington. The family will receive friends at the home Monday from 2:00-7:00 PM and at the church Tuesday from 1:00-2:00 PM.
